How It Started
Volume Shader began as a simple question: "Why is GPU benchmarking so complicated?"In an era where nearly every device has a capable graphics processor, testing GPU performance still required downloading bulky software, navigating confusing interfaces, and interpreting meaningless scores that varied wildly between benchmark versions.
We set out to build something different—a benchmark that anyone could run in seconds, directly from their browser, with results that actually mean something. No downloads, no installations, no account registrations. Just open the page and click "Start."
Our Philosophy
Three core principles guide everything we build:
Accessibility first. Performance testing shouldn't require technical expertise. A first-time computer user should be able to benchmark their GPU just as easily as an experienced hardware enthusiast. We design for the widest possible audience while never compromising on accuracy.
Transparency always. Our scoring methodology is fully documented. There are no hidden weights, no proprietary algorithms that favor certain vendors, and no pay-to-feature arrangements. When you see a score on our leaderboard, you can trust that it represents real performance.
Community driven. The leaderboard isn't just a feature—it's the heart of Volume Shader. Every benchmark submission contributes to a growing database of real-world performance data that benefits researchers, consumers, and the entire hardware community.

A Scientific Approach
Unlike synthetic benchmarks that test abstract operations, Volume Shader measures performance using the same rendering techniques found in modern games and professional applications. Each test creates a controlled, reproducible workload that reveals how your GPU handles real graphics computations.
Our methodology borrows from academic research practices. We use statistical outlier removal to eliminate noise from background processes. We separate desktop and mobile leaderboards because comparing a phone to a workstation isn't meaningful. We maintain historical data integrity so today's benchmarks can still be compared to results from months ago.
The result is a benchmark that provides genuine insight into GPU capabilities—not just a number to brag about, but actionable data for making informed hardware decisions.

Respecting Your Privacy
In an industry that often treats user data as a commodity, we take a fundamentally different approach. Volume Shader collects exactly what's needed to populate the leaderboard—GPU model, benchmark scores, and quality settings—and nothing more.
We don't track you across the web. We don't sell your data to advertisers. We don't require accounts or login credentials. Your benchmark results are associated with an anonymous, randomly generated ID stored only in your browser's local storage. If you clear your data, that association is gone forever.
This isn't just a privacy policy checkbox—it's a core architectural decision that shapes how we build every feature.
Looking Forward
Volume Shader is continuously evolving. We're actively working on expanded GPU comparison tools, historical performance tracking, and deeper integration with the emerging WebGPU standard. As browser capabilities advance, so will our benchmark.
We're also exploring partnerships with hardware reviewers, educational institutions, and research organizations who share our commitment to accessible, accurate performance data.
Most importantly, we listen to our community. Many of our most valuable improvements have come from user feedback—bug reports, feature suggestions, and ideas we never would have considered on our own.
